Money, it’s purposes and what society tells you
What Society tells you
There are many definitions and functions of money that we were taught while growing up, here are a few examples:-
According to Wikipedia, money is an item or verifiable record that is generally accepted as payment for goods and services. Wikipedia also tells us that there are four major functions of money:
- Medium of exchange(exchange for goods and services)
- Measure of value( measure of worth)
- Standard of deferred payment(payment of debt)
- Store of value(measure of wealth)
According to the English Dictionary, Money is a legally or socially binding conceptual contract of entitlement to wealth, payable for all debts and taxes.
I love the above definition because it expertly explains money as a legal or social binding concept. I want us to realise that this item we keep chasing all for the status of “i better pass you” was introduced by our own kind to keep people in check, after you read this article, you are going to look at money much differently.
In my opinion, Money is a tool or a weapon that serves two purposes; investment or expenses.
Im going to use our beloved country, Nigeria as an example, They told us that money is a store of value but the truth is if you saved one million naira in the year 2002 till date, it wouldn’t serve much as an efficient medium of exchange. Why? Because the value had dropped over these amount of years, therefore the buying power of money had reduced drastically because of inflation of goods, it would have been better off in investing in agriculture, foreign stock market but unfortunately the money you’ve saved all these years have little impact and would eventually be used to maintain petty bills (expenses).
Society has told you when you acquire money, the first thing you should do with it is to buy the fancy cars, buy the finest champagne in town, buy dem girls the finest of things but what they won’t tell you is to help the next person who needs help. Money can be used as a tool to help the masses, when you help a life, you haven’t just given them money but you’ve created a legacy for every life you’ve touched, you’ve planted a seed that can never be uprooted because the legacy you’ve left are evident in the lives that you’ve touched and will be there after you’re long gone.
I want you to think of money as a tool;a means to an end, when we switch to this mentality, we will be separate from the norm and our country will be a better place.
